Holidays are amazing. No matter whether you are still studying and are currently on semester break, or if you’re already working and simply taking a few days off. However, February is not necessarily the best time for outdoor activities, and you might feel a little uncreative what to do with so much free time.
This is why we compiled a list of the 5 best activities that you can do during your semester break. We guarantee, these activities are definitely fun and will brighten up your mood, despite the dark and gloomy weather outside.
Enjoy a Day at Therme Oberlaa
Winter is the best time to escape a day of rain and cold and enjoy the warmth and relaxation at a thermal bath. The great thing about Vienna is that Therme Oberlaa is literally just 25 min away and you can easily reach it by subway (line U1). The baths have something for everyone: From cosy, relaxing saunas, to slides, jacuzzis and loads of different swimming pools.
So no matter whether you’re looking for a relaxing spa day or an adventurous day in the water, Therme Oberlaa is surely right for you.
Snow Hiking on Rax
If you’re more in the mood for an actual winter activity, snowshoe hiking is the perfect thing for you. It’s not as cumbersome as skiing and you can do it, even if you only have a day or two off.
We tried it ourselves on Rax which you can reach from Vienna in like an hour or so. They have a cableway so no need to climb up the mountain. Once you are up, you can pre-book guides who bring all the equipment and meet you right on top of the mountain. They teach you how it works and take you a round on the mountain top. Amazing views and winter vibes included.
It’s not too exhausting and you don’t need to be extremely sporty to do it. So doing a snowshoe hike is definitely for you, if you’re looking for something adventurous to do during the semester break.
Treat yourself with chocolate
You might be thinking that you don’t need to be on vacation to treat yourself with some chocolate. And we couldn’t agree more: You can enjoy chocolate each and every day, especially if unis stress is treating you badly.
But we have something different in mind that does involve a bit more time: South of Vienna in Gloggnitz, Lindt has a factory and adjacent to it a shop. In it they sell off products on sale, special seasonal creations and basically anything that might get broken during production at very cheap prices. So if you have some time and you’re looking for a bargain, this is the perfect place for you to go.
If you like the idea but you’re looking for some different chocolate, you can also check out the Zotter chocolate factory in Styria. It is definitely a bit of a longer trip and you need a car for it, but it’s so worth it. At Zotter you can’t only buy cheap chocolate, but they actually take you through their entire factory and you can try chocolate at different stages, from the raw cocoa beans to the final product. It’s so amazing and any chocolate lover has to see it once in their life.
Visit one of the great museums in Vienna
If you’re more into culture, then the semester break is perfect for you to check out one of the many great museums in Vienna. No matter whether you are into art or history, Vienna has something to offer to you.
We’ve even written a whole blog post about the 5 best art museums in Vienna. So make sure to check that out.
If you’re looking for something more historical, then our top tip is “Haus der Geschichte Österreich”. It takes you through the Austrian history from 1848 up to today. It’s really immersive and its exhibits are more than just a traditional history museum.
Join your first Xperience
Our last tip is something slightly different. It’s not just a single activity that you can do, but a community leisure time app that will allow you to join many great activities.
We’ve been lucky enough to build up a great community of people in Vienna over the past year and would love to see you join Xperience as well. You can find the app here.
It’s perfect for you if you’re in the mood for making new friends in Vienna, but also if you’re just curious to find some more inspiration of what you could do in Vienna. And if you like it, you can make use of the extra time during the semester break to join your first Xperience and try it out for yourself.
