Weinbau Schmuckenschlager

One of the most magical Austrian traditions you can experience is going to a Heuriger in the vineyards around Vienna and one of our favorite places to enjoy this tradition is the Weinbau Schmuckenschlager in Klosterneuburg. This family business is a real Klosterneuburg staple in the town community and makes delicious wine as well as hosting an authentic Heuriger. The business has been in the family since 1860 when it was started as a small farm that the family built up to the Burschenschank and Viticulture that is now run by Johannes and Andrea Schmuckenschlager with grandparents Frederike and Josef and their two sons Paul and Klaus.

Over the traditional Heurigen counter, their guests can choose from a delicious array of warm and cold classic Austrian dishes like G’selchtes (type of Austrian smoked meat) or Liptauer spread (a savory spread that is a staple in every Heuriger or Burschenschank that is traditionally eaten in Austria and Slovakia).

The quality wine served at Weinbau Schmuckenschlager is made by the family business from grapes from the surrounding vineyards. When making their wine, the Schmuckenschlager family combines care and knowledge passed down from generations of winemakers with new innovations in winemaking to always achieve the highest quality of delicious and authentic Austrian wine! They offer a variety of different types of wine from typical Austrian Grüner Veltliner to more rare types of wine like pinot gris (also known as Grauer Burgunder).

Before the coronavirus, guests could enjoy food and drinks in the homey but elegant indoor space. The glass ceiling letting in lots of natural light, lots of plants, and the light wooden furnishings create a welcoming atmosphere that evokes a feeling of being invited to dinner at a traditional Austrian family and enjoying an evening at an elegant restaurant at the same time.

But with the restrictions due to the pandemic, the Schmuckenschlager family has come up with a creative solution to make it possible for guests to enjoy the Heurigen-experience safely and in a unique way. Every weekend on Saturday and Sunday (starting again in May)  they offer a picnic in their vineyards. Guests can register beforehand and choose the number of people, a time, and the type of picnic basket they want. You get your own checkered picnic blanket and can enjoy delicious treats with a beautiful view.

Furthermore, they sell products produced in the family business on every first Saturday of the month where they sell their wine amongst other delicacies.

All in all this gem is the perfect place to enjoy some of the best Austria has to offer: the Burschenschank, great wine, and the beautiful landscape with its vineyards and we can only recommend it as one of your favorite places!
